Bryn ✖ Personality ✖ Abilities
Jun. 13th, 2015 12:03 pm✖ Character Personality:
Bryn is a deceptively complex person - outwardly, he seems charming and friendly, easy-going, quick to laughter and light sarcasm, natural and confident. The truth is that there is much more to Bryn than this surface persona. Given to dramatic mood swings, a short temper when certain intolerances are touched on, and with a ruthless streak a mile wide when it comes to the bare logic of a situation, Bryn can swing from warm to cool in a moment, particularly if that moment is a dangerous one that requires him to make a snap decision.
When threatened, Bryn tends to hide - he gets sick easily due to his rough childhood, and when he's feeling broody and depressive, or when he's particularly ill, he's given to hiding away somewhere warm and safe until it passes. He doesn't like to talk about his troubles, preferring to keep them to himself, though he doesn't turn away offers of help.
The outward charm and ease of his smile isn't a front, or a fake. Bryn has been enduring trouble, grief, and the difficulties of life since he was a child, but he knows that everyone in his world has, and so he can be extremely easy-going and calm in most situations. He's seen enough life to take most things in stride, and panic is not something he's given to. Bryn can be very charming when he's at ease, inside a city or after a long day of exercise, relaxing around the fire. He flirts naturally, smiles almost constantly, and holds himself relaxed. He's confident, well aware of his own strengths and weaknesses and how to compensate for the latter with the former, so he has a sort of internal strength that gives him the power to set others at ease, in a naturally easy-going way. Despite this, there is a constant lingering sarcasm in how he speaks, and it can range from light and teasing to biting, whether or not he intends to hurt with it.
Bryn is very open with his emotions and thoughts, he keeps very few secrets and when he does, they're generally to keep the confidences of people he loves. This honesty can be a blessing and a curse - his compliments are genuine, as is his advice, his words of love; but his criticism can sting, and he's very blunt with it. He has no fear of calling other people on their shit, and has a thick skin when it comes to his own shit being called out. Despite this, his honesty is not out of trust - there are only four people in the world he truly trusts, and that isn't likely to change, not without years of friendship. That doesn't, however, mean he won't be at ease with people even while not trusting them, it simply means that he's capable of smiling and joking and flirting with people and then being willing to throw them to the wolves to protect his family the next. It's the natural order of things, as far as he's concerned.
When he's not at ease, Bryn can turn on his animal instinct in a heartbeat, and it becomes very easy to see how he was able to survive for years alone in the jungle as a child. Very in tune with nature and the natural order of things, Bryn has a healthy respect for death and injury, but very little fear of it. He also has little regret at ending the lives of people who endanger his own or that of his family. While he knows the meaning of right and wrong, the letter of the law and the motivation behind it, and always intends to do what's right, when it boils down to it he will sacrifice moral correctness to protect what he loves. He's a survivor, aware of his place in the food chain, and both respects and scoffs at the wilderness while treating the human world as just another jungle. In the wild, he moves like a cat, stealthy and light on his feet, without a hint of emotion.
Bryn can be quite impulsive, both in battle and in his off time, but it isn't impulse driven by emotion, rather by instinct. Bryn is a human who is very aware that humans are animals, and he will often react on instinct, either in a fight, a tense situation that could become a fight, or to flirt with or sleep with someone he's only recently met, and only pause to think out the logical progression of his actions afterward. Despite being married, he can be quite promiscuous when he has the right chemistry with someone, and he and Lili both accept that it's fine so long as he doesn't form another romantic bond unless it's with a campmate.
The one time Bryn does lose out his logic to emotion is when he gets angry - there are certain triggers that make him lose his temper. Disloyalty, betrayal, the injury of his family or Lark, and being made to be completely powerless are things that make him lose his mind. When angry, he'll react viciously, like a cornered animal - he will lash out with sharp angry words or with a knife or arrows without thinking, left to pick up the pieces afterward. Thankfully, while his temper can flare up violently, it usually passes quickly and without much of a grudge.
Finally, Bryn is not terribly well-educated, something he's working slowly on correcting. He doesn't have the best spelling, and keeps most of his notes through quite well-done sketches in his logbook. Artistic and thoughtful when not in danger, particularly about his place in the world, he has a lot of interest in writing down his experiences and the things he's seen in the form of a book, but is currently not at a high enough reading and writing level to actually follow through with it.
